Toshiba Announces Cell Chip Set and Cell Reference Set

Cell Industries feels that the SCC from Toshiba is a great first step toward switching the world to Cell.

Cell is the first system designed from the ground up to allow multiple processors to efficiently cooperate. Each Cell Chip contains 9 processor cores which cooperate along with very high off chip bandwidth in the range of 100 Giga Bytes / second. This high bandwidth can be shared between Memory, Disks, and Multiple Cell Chips.

The Cell Chip itself is guaranteed very large volume production because it is being used in the Next Sony Playstation --- PS3. Sony has talked about releasing the PS3 with a version of Linux and presumably some software development tools.

The Cell was developed by a consortium of Sony, Toshiba, and IBM (STI).

The Cell Instruction set has been released so people can see for themselves the sort of low level functionality. Total computing power is about 256 GFOPS single precision.
